NOFF (Nordic Freshwater Fish Group) is a Nordic workshop that has been held almost annually since 1991 in Finland, Sweden, Norway or Denmark.  For the first time, this meeting is being hosted in Ireland, with the goal of sharing expertise and knowledge in the area of freshwater research and ecology.  Workshop delegates included scientists from Inland Fisheries Ireland, the Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute, the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research, the Swedish Board of Fisheries and the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency.  Topics up for discussion include the WFD (Water Framework Directive) classification tools for fish in rivers and lakes, WFD intercalibration of international survey analysis, water quality and fish interactions in lakes and rivers, fish sampling methods, fish ageing methodology, hydroacoustic sampling methods, genetics analysis of Irish trout (Corrib and Mask).  Presentations on IFIs national monitoring programmes for eels, fish in artificial waterbodies and the Habitats Directive were also included.

The fishery experts also visited Lough Corrib and saw some of the experimental work being carried out by Inland Fisheries Irelands CASIE project in their fight against the invasive aquatic plant Lagarosiphn major on the lake.

Dr. Cathal Gallagher, IFI, Head of Research and Development said:  “I’m delighted to welcome such an expert international team of fishery scientists to Ireland, and look forward to a beneficial exchange of expertise and knowledge.  It is through such exchanges that we can ensure that research conducted in Ireland is completed to the highest international standards and in the most efficient way possible.  I hope the NOFF team benefited from the excellent research being conducted in Ireland and also enjoyed their visit to Galway.
