Environmental Function

Inland Fisheries Ireland’s environmental role is delivered primarily by a network of Environmental Officers based throughout the country in each of our 6 River Basin Districts.

Roads and Bridges

Part of our remit is to ensure that fish habitats, biodiversity and water quality are never compromised as a result of road construction or bridge building.

Agriculture Guide

The EPA’s recent water quality report identifies nutrient pollution, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus, as being the primary cause of pollution of Irish watercourses.

Gravel Removal

Protecting and maintaining productive fish habitats, including river bed materials such as gravels, is also part of our remit.

Forestry

Fisheries can be significantly impacted by forested lands within their catchments. These impacts can be negative or positive depending on the type of land, trees and management practices used.

Peat Harvesting

Intact peatland is a valuable ecosystem which stores carbon and helps to mitigate extreme floods and droughts.

Fish Kills

Inland Fisheries Ireland investigates fish kill events with a view to addressing their causes and preventing their reoccurrence. Fish kills are often symptomatic of a problem in our environment, and it is in all our interests to understand why they happen so that we can put all measures in place to minimise the chances of them happening again.
