Freedom of information
Under Section 11 of the Freedom of Information Act 2014 every person has a legal right to request access to any record held by an FOI body, subject to the provisions of the Act. This is known as the right of access. The right of access is subject to exemptions set out in the Act.
IFI is a public body pursuant to Section 6(1)(b) and is subject to the Act’s requirements on requests for access to records.

About FOI Requests
Under Section 12(1) of the Act, any person who makes a Freedom of information request for access to records held by an FOI body must:
- State that the request is made under the Freedom of Information Act 2014
- Contains sufficient details for IFI to identify the records requested by indicating, if possible, the date of the record or the timeframe within which the records were created.
- Specify the form of record requested, for example digital form.
The right of access to records held by FOI bodies is subject to exemptions under the Act such as a record requested does not exist (Section 15 of the Act), a record is subject to legal professional privilege (Section 31), a record disclose personal information (Section 37), a record contains commercially sensitive information (Section 36) or other exemptions.
