International scientists attend Dublin meeting as EU project to conserve migratory fish species commences

Monday, 8th of April 2019: Pictured are research partners from EU members states in the Atlantic area – Ireland, UK, France, Spain and Portugal – who were attending a meeting hosted by Inland Fisheries Ireland in Swords, Dublin today. The research partners are working on the DiadES project which aims to promote international action and cooperation with a view to conserving vulnerable migratory fish.

The DiadES project sees 30 partners from different countries participate with Inland Fisheries Ireland leading out on the project in Ireland. The meeting in Dublin signified the official commencement of the project which comes as migratory fish and their habitats continue to experience pressure as a result of human activity and climate change.

The initiative will focus on fish such as shads, lampreys, salmon, trout and mullet which are known as ‘diadromous’ fish as they migrate between fresh and salt waters to reproduce or feed. It will address the Ecological Services provided by the species with a view to establishing as much information as possible about the commercial and cultural roles of these species.

Each European partner has assembled a small network of associate partners to support the project locally and provide further expertise and insights. In Ireland, the project will focus on the South East Coast, Waterford Harbour, Suir and Barrow estuaries. Local partners include:

  • Angling Council of Ireland-Federation of Sea Anglers
  • Port of Waterford
  • Sea Fisheries Protection Authority
  • SE Regional inshore Fishermen’s Forum
  • Dingle Aquarium

The DiadES project is led by the French research institute Irstea and is financed by the Interreg Atlantic Area Programme of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) . For more information about Inland Fisheries Ireland, visit www.fisheriesireland.ie.
