Update on the proposed IFI fish farm phase out plan

Inland Fisheries Ireland has recently announced its decision to phase out its fish farming operations. Currently operations take place in Roscrea, Co. Tipperary, Cullion, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, Lough Allua, West Cork and Cong , Co. Mayo.

IFI has written to affected stakeholders advising them that the farms are operating as normal for 2016 and that a consultation process will take place to develop the cessation plan.

It is IFIs intention to maintain one facility that will be used for research and necessary stocking. Cong, Co. Mayo has been identified as the site with most potential . This is due to the quality and quantity of its water supply which is an important consideration for fish production.

Ultimately the hatchery at Cong is expected to be an upgraded facility capable of housing a modern hatchery research facility. Ends
