International fish telemetry workshop co-hosted by IFI held in Dublin

Fish telemetry experts from Europe met in Dublin recently to review fish tracking technology and learn about new developments in this rapidly advancing field. The Fish Telemetry Workshop for Expert Practitioners was co-hosted by Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI), the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA) and the Norwegian Environment Agency (NEA) in Dublin. Many of the leading international practitioners in fisheries telemetry came together to impart and exchange their expert knowledge, gained over many years, to delegates from twelve European countries. The workshop aimed to provide practical knowledge for fisheries telemetry practitioners, share and improve skill sets and knowledge, and support the development of an expert network with a view to future project collaborations.

Topics covered included current telemetry technology, future requirements and advances in the tools available for tracking fish both in freshwater and at sea, practical requirements relating to design, planning, and tag and receiver system selection, and combining telemetry with other techniques such as genetics, as well as statistical and ethical considerations.

The workshop sessions initiated a wide range of very worthwhile discussions, both formal and informal, which should better inform present and future telemetry-related work and increase the possibilities for future international project collaborations between attendees and their respective organisations.
