Updated IFI statement re fish kill at Crana River, County Donegal

Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) and statutory partners are now following a line of inquiry regarding a significant fish kill that took place in Co. Donegal this week.

The incident occurred on the Crana River, and it is estimated that approximately 260 juvenile salmon and brown trout have died.

Fish mortalities were observed over a 350m stretch of the river.

Inland Fisheries Ireland with support from Donegal County Council and the River Basin Management Services, have been on the ground investigating the issue.

Water and fish samples have been taken from the river and water samples have been sent for analysis.

An interagency group met on Saturday (29th August) and again today (31st August), led by IFI, to discuss the fish kill and included representatives from Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment, National Parks and Wildlife Service, Marine Institute, Donegal County Council Uisce Eireann, and the River Basin Management Services.

IFI has been working with statutory bodies in line with the new national interagency protocol for investigating significant fish kills and is the lead agency on this case.

The interagency group was convened under the protocol to enable rapid coordination during the initial response to the incident. 
As a result of the progress made, a line of enquiry has been established, and the group has completed its role. 

The investigation now moves into the next phase under the lead of IFI, working closely with relevant agencies.
