The Bakery Weir Partial Removal project is located on the River Suir, in Cahir, County Tipperary. Bakery Weir consists of an 18th Century masonry weir with adjacent Mill structure.
IFI completed a barrier assessment in 2018, which found that the structure at Cahir was a significant barrier to migrating salmonids, lamprey and coarse fish.
The Public Information Day was held in Cahir House Hotel from 3pm to 7:30pm on the 6th of November 2025.
The proposed design at Bakery Weir consists of the removal of two thirds of the weir and fish pass on the western side of the barrier. This design provides the best ecological benefits and It allows the creation of a hydromorphologically diverse watercourse and provides a habitat for a variety of small animals, aquatic plants and fish due to the natural characteristics of the restored river channel.
Advantages of the proposed design:
Improvement of the hydromorphological conditions by restoring natural processes in the river
- Nature-like appearance representing the pristine condition
- Restoration of migration for all species
- Alignment in the existing riverbed appears feasible
- Simple construction
- Low maintenance
- Aligns with objectives set out in Water Framework Directive.
- Cost effective
- Ensures no impact on the structural integrity of the mill race and building.
What’s Happening?
Bakery Weir will be partially removed; around two-thirds of the weir and fish pass on the western side. This will restore the river’s natural flow while protecting the mill race and nearby structures.
Why Partially Remove the Weir?
Partial removal gives maximum ecological benefits without losing heritage value. It improves river health and fish movement while maintaining structural safety. Partial removal restores natural sediment movement, improving river shape, flow, and long-term stability.
What Was Assessed?
Studies examined water flow, sediment, habitats, fish passage, and structure stability to ensure the design is safe and effective.
Habitat and Wildlife
A more natural river channel will support fish migration, aquatic plants, and wildlife, creating a healthier, more diverse ecosystem.
The Proposed Solution
A nature-like, cost-effective design that is simple to build and maintain, balancing restoration with preservation.
Benefits
- Restores natural river processes
- Improves fish passage
- Enhances habitats
- Protects heritage structures
- Meets environmental targets
