Currane Anglers Survey 2022

Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) recognises the potential value of anglers’ knowledge of fisheries they frequent. To inform fishery status with this knowledge, IFI has developed a method that aims to capture anglers' knowledge and hands-on experience to help track changes in fish stocks and ecosystems. The new method is called FLEKSI, which stands for Fisher's Local Ecological Knowledge Surveillance Indicators. By sharing your knowledge through this survey (it will take about 10 mins to complete), we hope your observations will help us to identify any changes in the system and when they occurred.

How FLEKSI works:

  • You are asked to record how many years you have been angling in the Currane catchment. It is very important that you answer this question as accurately as you can.
  • Each FLEKSI question asks you to compare an aspect of the fishery system ‘NOW’ with how you remember it ‘THEN’, i.e., when you FIRST STARTED angling in the Currane catchment.
  • The FLEKSI questions request a response on a 5-point scale from ‘Strongly disagree’ to ‘Strongly agree’.
  • Your responses are plotted with those of other respondents to build a picture of anglers' overall perception of how your fishery has changed over time.

FLEKSI acknowledges that local ecological knowledge accumulated by anglers is meaningful and valuable. The Currane STAMP project aims use FLEKSI to provide anglers with an opportunity to contribute their observations of the Currane fishery as citizen scientists. This survey appeals to all anglers in the Currane fishery, salmon and brown trout as well as sea trout, to get involved, no matter how long they have been fishing for: all responses will help us to build an understanding of the history and ecological status of your fishery. The results will be published by IFI, or emailed to you if you request.

Populations of sea trout and salmon throughout Ireland are facing serious challenges from strong ecological changes over recent years. This FLEKSI survey is an opportunity for anglers to share their knowledge and contribute to the conservation and management of this important sea-trout and salmon fishery.

Thank you in advance for contributing your knowledge to the survey
