Killer Shrimp

Killer shrimpKiller Shrimp, Dikerogammerus villosus, is the latest freshwater invasive species which is threatening Irish waterways.

The killer shrimp is much bigger than our own native freshwater shrimp at 30mm but is otherwise quite similar in appearance.

Unlike our native shrimp it feeds aggressively taking large invertebrates and even small fish as prey.

This species can have an enormous impact on freshwater ecosystems so if you find one anywhere in Ireland please let us know.
